Here’s the truth about worship leading: The same gift that opened the door will become a cage if you don’t build depth underneath it. You got the platform because you can sing. Because you’ve got energy. Because you look good and sound like the songs people know. But what happens in year 5 when the newness wears off? Year 10 when your voice changes? Year 15 when the style you built on is outdated? If all you have is talent, you’re done. Because talent is a gift. Depth is a choice. Talent is what you were born with. Depth is what you build in the secret place. When nobody’s watching. When there’s no stage. No spotlight. No audience. Depth is sitting with the Word at 6am. Depth is character that matches your lyrics. Depth is intimacy with God that doesn’t depend on whether Sunday went well. We’re platforming youth, energy, and aesthetics. And calling it anointing. But depth? Character? Actual knowledge of God? That’s optional. And then we wonder why worship leaders burn out in their 30s and 40s. Because you built a ministry on talent instead of depth. On performance instead of presence. On what you can do instead of who you are. Talent opens doors. But depth is what keeps you in the room. You can sing your way onto a platform. But you can’t sing your way through a decade of ministry. You need roots for that. And roots only grow deep when you’re willing to sit still long enough to let them.
