Dr. David Jeremiah: A Comprehensive Biography and Ministry Overview Early Life and Family Background David Paul Jeremiah was born on February 13, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio, into a devout Christian family. His father, Dr. James T. Jeremiah, was a respected pastor and later became the president of Cedarville College (now Cedarville University) in Ohio. His mother, Ruby, nurtured a strong spiritual atmosphere at home, encouraging Bible reading, prayer, and involvement in church activities. This early environment instilled in young David a lifelong passion for faith, service, and leadership within the Christian community. In 1953, when David was a young boy, his family moved to Cedarville, Ohio, as his father accepted the presidency of Cedarville College. Growing up in a Christian academic and ministry-focused environment had a profound impact on him. Surrounded by faith, education, and church life, David was shaped to understand the importance of theology, leadership, and evangelism from an early age. Education and Theological Training David Jeremiah began his formal education at Cedarville College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963. While at Cedarville, he not only excelled academically but also developed a deeper passion for Christian service. During these years, he sensed a strong call toward pastoral ministry. He pursued graduate theological studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, one of the leading seminaries in evangelical education, where he earned a Master of Theology (Th.M.) degree in 1967. Dallas Seminary provided him with a strong foundation in biblical exposition, theology, and preaching. Later, he also undertook graduate work at Grace Seminary to strengthen his theological background. Cedarville University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity in 1981 in recognition of his contributions to ministry. In 1969, at the age of 28, David Jeremiah founded Blackhawk Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Starting with only seven families, Jeremiah demonstrated vision and leadership in growing the congregation into a thriving ministry. Under his leadership, the church expanded rapidly, eventually reaching approximately 1,300 members within just over a decade. During his time at Blackhawk, Jeremiah also established Blackhawk Christian School, which provided Christian education to children from kindergarten through 12th grade. The founding of the school reflected his deep commitment to shaping young lives through Christ-centered education. Transition to Shadow Mountain Community Church In 1981, David Jeremiah accepted the call to become senior pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church in El Cajon, California. The church was later renamed Shadow Mountain Community Church, and under Jeremiah’s leadership, it became one of the largest and most influential evangelical churches in Southern California. Shadow Mountain grew into a multi-campus megachurch, with thousands of weekly attendees and numerous satellite campuses spread across the region. The church also became home to Southern California Seminary, an academic institution dedicated to training pastors, theologians, and ministry leaders. Jeremiah currently serves as the seminary’s Chancellor, continuing his father’s legacy of combining church leadership with higher Christian education. Perhaps the most defining feature of David Jeremiah’s ministry is the founding of Turning Point Ministries in 1982. Initially launched as a local radio program, Turning Point quickly expanded into a global media ministry. Its stated mission is “to deliver the unchanging Word of God to an ever-changing world.” Dr. Jeremiah is widely recognized for his expository preaching style. Rather than focusing on motivational or topical sermons, he consistently teaches through Scripture, verse by verse, emphasizing context, meaning, and practical application.
