Did Kirk Cameron just open the door to annihilationism? 🤔
In this video, Pastor Matthew Everhard responds to the recent firestorm surrounding Kirk Cameron’s comments on annihilationism versus the historic Christian doctrine of eternal conscious torment (ECT).
Annihilationism teaches that unbelievers are ultimately destroyed and cease to exist after judgment, while ECT holds that the punishment of hell is conscious and eternal. While Kirk Cameron has been solid on many theological issues, his apparent openness to annihilationism has raised serious doctrinal questions—especially within historic Protestant and Reformed theology.
Rather than rehashing every proof text, this video asks a crucial question:
👉 What should Christians do if the biblical data appears divided?
From there, we explore:
What annihilationism actually teaches
Why eternal conscious torment has been the overwhelming position of the historic church
The witness of the Reformed confessions, Protestant denominations, Catholics, and the early church
Why annihilationism has often been associated with cults and fringe movements
How doctrines tested across time and denominations carry serious theological weight
Why annihilationism struggles to fit with core Christian beliefs about the soul, resurrection, and divine justice
A powerful “Pascal’s Wager”–style argument applied to hell and evangelism
The Watchman Principle (Ezekiel) and our responsibility to warn unbelievers truthfully
Even if annihilationism were true, warning people about eternal punishment would do no harm—but if ECT is true and we fail to warn, the consequences are unthinkable.
