Most people in the ancient world already believed in gods, spirits, miracles, and the supernatural. The shocking part was this: Why would anyone worship a man who had been crucified? Crucifixion was the most humiliating form of execution in the Roman world. It symbolized shame, defeat, and disgrace. No one would invent a religion centered around a crucified Messiah if they were trying to gain power or influence. Yet that's exactly what the earliest Christians proclaimed. Their message wasn't that Jesus was merely a wise teacher. Their message was that the crucified Jesus had risen from the dead and was Lord of all.
