Worship Leaders: Stop Building Playlists

Most worship leaders choose songs based on preference, popularity, or what transitions well musically.
But the real question is this.
Where is your congregation right now?
And where does God want to take them?
Because worship sets are not playlists.
They are pastoral pathways.
Some churches walk into the room carrying grief.
Some walk in distracted.
Some walk in tired.
Some walk in hard-hearted.
And if you ignore where the people are and lead only from your own preference, the room feels the disconnect immediately.
This is why worship leaders need more than musical skill.
You need discernment.
You need awareness.
You need to understand how worship and the preached Word work together.
If the sermon is calling people into surrender, but the worship set never creates space for surrender, the congregation gets pulled in two directions all morning.
That tension changes everything.
The strongest worship leaders know how to meet people where they are without leaving them there.
