Gap Theory / Genesis 1:1-2 If you X-ray a Renaissance painting, you'll sometimes find an entire hidden image underneath... an earlier draft the artist painted over. What if the very first page of the Bible had something hidden underneath it too? Not erased words. An entire lost world. Millions of Christians have been taught exactly that. It's called the Gap Theory, and it claims Genesis 1:1 records a complete, ancient creation... destroyed by judgment... before Genesis 1:2 even begins. So in this first episode of our investigation, we go straight to the primary sources to test that claim: the oldest surviving Hebrew copy of Genesis 1, the actual grammar of verse 2, and the literary structure of the chapter itself. This isn't about attacking anyone who holds this view. It's about going back to the text, in the language it was written in, before we inherited an interpretation of it. In this episode: – What the Gap Theory actually claims, and why it became so popular – 4QGenesisG, one of the oldest surviving manuscripts of Genesis 1 – Why the earliest Hebrew text has no verse numbers, no punctuation, and no vowel points – The Hebrew grammar of Genesis 1:2, examined word by word – Why "the earth was formless" and "the earth became formless" are not the same claim – The literary structure that connects the six days of creation If you want to go deeper into the Hebrew mechanics, the literary structure, and a full line-by-line breakdown of Genesis, join us inside The Portal at GCLMedia.org.
