Most Christians recite it every Sunday and have never once been taught what it means. And Sheol in the Old Testament has two sides — a place of torment and a place of comfort called Abraham's Bosom where the righteous dead waited. The thief on the cross was told today you will be with me in paradise. Not heaven yet. Paradise — the comfort side of Sheol. And Jesus descended into that same realm. But here is what Allen Nolan makes clear that most Christians have never been taught. Jesus did not go to the torment side to suffer more. He went as the victor. He led captivity captive. He proclaimed his victory to the imprisoned spirits. And then on the third day he ascended — taking the righteous dead with him into heaven for the first time.
