Texas is adding the Beatitudes to its public school reading list, and the reaction has been intense. But before reacting, ask yourself this: What do the Beatitudes actually teach? In Matthew 5, Jesus doesn't teach revenge, pride, or the pursuit of power. He teaches humility. He teaches mercy. He teaches purity of heart. He teaches peacemaking. One of the passages students will read says: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." Whether you're a Christian or an atheist, here's the question: Would our society be better or worse if more people genuinely lived out those values?
