Silas

Silas first appears as one of the leaders of the Jerusalem church (Acts 15:22), serving as an inspired teacher (Acts 15:32). His name, derived from Latin meaning "wood," identifies him as a Hellenistic Jew with Roman citizenship (Acts 16:37). The apostles and elders chose him and Judas Barsabas to accompany Paul and Barnabas back to Antioch, bearing the Jerusalem Council's decree (Acts 15:22-23). After completing this mission, he returned to Jerusalem (Acts 15:33).

Silas quickly became Paul's chosen companion for the second missionary journey (Acts 15:40). During this expedition, he was left at Berea with Timothy while Paul went ahead to Athens (Acts 17:14). He later rejoined Paul at Corinth (Acts 18:5), where he remained active in the evangelistic work. Paul's epistles to the Thessalonians list Silas as a co-sender (1 Thessalonians 1:1; 2 Thessalonians 1:1), and he is mentioned in connection with Paul's ministry at Corinth (2 Corinthians 1:19).

Silas may have been the Silvanus who carried Peter's first epistle to churches in Asia Minor (1 Peter 5:12), though this identification remains uncertain. Church tradition, of limited historical reliability, claims he became bishop of Corinth. No biblical record exists of his death or final years of ministry.
