Encyclopedia entry · the book of John

John's Gospel is the latest and the most theological of the four — written near the end of the first century by the disciple Jesus loved, after he had decades to think about what he had witnessed. While the other three Gospels share much of the same material, John tells different stories, in a different voice, with a different aim: that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that by believing you may have life in his name.

The book is structured around seven signs, seven I AM sayings, and a long farewell discourse delivered in an upper room the night before the cross. More than any other Gospel, John dwells on Jesus' own words about himself.

Prologue and Witness

John opens not in Bethlehem but before time. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Fourteen verses in, the Word becomes flesh and pitches his tent among us. Then John the Baptist appears, points to a man walking toward him, and says the two words that will shape the rest of the Gospel: the Lamb of God.

The Book of Signs

Seven miracles, hand-picked and theologically loaded. Water becomes wine; a paralyzed man rises; five thousand are fed; a man born blind is given sight; Lazarus walks out of his own tomb. Threaded through them are the seven I AM sayings — the bread of life, the light of the world, the good shepherd, the way and the truth and the life. Each sign is also an argument: this is who he is.

The Upper Room

Five chapters of Jesus' last words to his disciples before the cross — the longest sustained teaching of his recorded ministry. He washes their feet. He promises another Helper. He tells them they are the branches and he is the vine. And in chapter seventeen — the high-priestly prayer — he prays not for himself but for them, and for everyone who will believe through their word. That includes us.

The Cross and the Empty Tomb

The arrest, the trials, the crucifixion — told with John's careful eye for what was foretold and fulfilled. Then Mary at the tomb, the disciples behind locked doors, doubting Thomas with his fingers in the wounds, and on a beach at dawn, fish frying on a charcoal fire and three questions to Peter: do you love me? The Gospel ends as it began: with someone being asked who Jesus is, and saying yes.
