Malachi

Malachi was contemporary with Nehemiah, as evidenced by parallels between his book and Nehemiah's account (compare Malachi 2:8 with Nehemiah 13:15, and Malachi 2:10–16 with Nehemiah 13:23–27). He prophesied after Haggai and Zechariah, likely around 420 BC, either after or before Nehemiah's second return from Persia. Unlike earlier post-exilic prophets, Malachi addresses a community with a functioning temple and established worship system.

Malachi's prophecies confront the spiritual complacency of his generation. He rebukes priests for offering defiled sacrifices, declares that "a son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is the honor due to me?" (Malachi 1:6), and condemns mixed marriages that led people away from faithful covenant practice. His message emphasizes that God desires authentic worship and justice, not merely external compliance.

Despite his stern warnings, Malachi concludes with hope. He promises "the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays" (Malachi 4:2) and foretells the coming of Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord (Malachi 4:5–6). He calls God's people to remember the law of Moses while anticipating divine restoration and renewal.
