Museum reconstructions make Homo erectus look primitive and ape-like, but the actual fossils look much more human. Even the smaller skull sizes fall within the range found in modern humans, and features like heavy brow ridges and flatter foreheads aren't enough to make someone less human. There's also a disturbing history behind some early interpretations of these fossils. Scientists noticed similarities between Homo erectus and living people groups, but some early evolutionists viewed those same groups as "primitive" evolutionary throwbacks… or even subhuman. (Awful!) That wasn't scientific evidence… It was part r*cism and part plainly wrong interpretation motivated by wanting the fossils to fit the evolutionary theory. When you strip away the assumptions, Homo erectus looks a lot less like a missing link and more like a regular dude.
