Who are the watchers? What if demons were not originally understood as fallen angels?
According to the Book of Enoch, the origin of demons begins with the Watchers, rebellious heavenly beings connected to the mysterious “sons of God” in Genesis 6. They descend to Earth, take human wives, teach forbidden knowledge, and produce the giant Nephilim.
So are demons really the spirits of dead Nephilim? Were the Watchers fallen angels? And did this ancient Jewish tradition influence what the New Testament says about demons, Satan, spiritual warfare, and angels imprisoned in darkness?
In this Bible explainer, we trace the story of the Watchers from Genesis 6 and the Book of Enoch into Jude, 2 Peter, 1 Peter, and early Christianity.
One of the most important distinctions in this discussion is often overlooked.
The New Testament speaks extensively about demons, unclean spirits, Satan, rebellious angels, spiritual powers, and final judgment. Jude even directly quotes 1 Enoch 1:9. Yet the New Testament never explicitly says that demons are the spirits of dead Nephilim.
That specific explanation comes from the Enochic tradition.
So in this video, we carefully separate what Genesis says, what the Book of Enoch adds, and what the New Testament actually teaches.
