This story is recorded in 2 Samuel 12. David's sin of adultery followed by murder (attempting to cover up his affair) would cost him the life of his son. Verse 15 says, "...the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife had bore to David and he became very sick. David therefore sought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in and lay all night on the floor." (TLV) This is when these words were first prayed. A desperate prayer, on the floor, all night long, for seven days. Begging for the life of his child. Begging for grace. For unmerited favor. To be made clean. To be restored. To rejoice again.
