Bishop Irenei on Sacraments Outside the Church
Patristic Nectar
teaching
September 3, 2025
In this teaching, Bishop Irenei addresses the often-asked question: Does the Orthodox Church acknowledge sacraments outside her life? He explains that the Orthodox understanding of the sacraments (or mysteries) is rooted in the life of the Church as the Body of Christ. By definition, sacraments are acts of the Church, enacted by Christ through His Body, and therefore cannot exist apart from her.
