Dr. Lynn Sayne, a chaplain of New Port Richey, Florida, is known for his vibrant faith and tireless service to his community; a faithful servant of God who walks faithfully among the people, pouring out his strength in tireless devotion and steadfast love. Yet as it is written, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.” (Psalm 34:19) His affliction came suddenly, when a United States Postal Service truck struck his while driving his car in Tampa, Florida. His spine was shattered, and he became as one who “could in no wise lift himself up” (Luke 12:11), and was paralyzed from the neck down. For three long years, he dwelt in the shadowed chambers of the intensive care unit, a place of machinery, murmuring monitors, and ceaseless nights. Yet even there, as he lived as Paul in chains, in a coma, unable to move or speak, yet his spirit and mind were alive and he heard every word of doom spoken by the doctors, and all the words of hope from his children. He was bound in body, but unbound in the spirit, and heard God tell him “I am here”. In time, he was able to minister, pray, and speak life to the doctors, nurses, visitors, and all who entered his room. “God’s word became a lamp unto his feet and a light unto his Path.” (Psalm 119:105) Like Paul who suffered, his body was bound, but “the Spirit of God within him was free.” (2 Timothy 2:9) His suffering and his faith: a testimony that no prison could silence. Then the Lord, who “raises up those bowed down,” (Psalm 145:14) visited him with his healing hand and restored his spine, strengthened his limbs, and caused him to stand upon his feet once more. As the psalmist declared, “Thou hast loosed my bonds.” (Psalm 116:15) After three and a half years, Dr. Sayne walked out of the hospital, renewed in purpose, and returned to shepherd his flock, speaking wisdom to the weary, giving faith to the faithless, and hope to those seeking God’s Spirit, Truth, and Love.
