How do you spot someone who is a "great way off"? You have to be actively looking for them. The father in Jesus' story didn't just stumble upon his returning son; he was actively searching the horizon, longing for his wayward child to come home. That is exactly how your Heavenly Father feels about you. He is waiting, watching, and longing for your return. "And he arose and came to his father.
