Here’s one of the deepest questions you can ask: Why is there something rather than nothing? Saying the universe simply exists doesn’t explain why it exists. And the universe can’t cause its own existence. For something to create itself, it would somehow need to exist before it existed. So perhaps something else caused it. But if that thing also depends on something else for its existence, we can keep asking the same question. Why does any of it exist at all? This is where the argument from contingency becomes incredibly interesting. Eventually, the explanation must terminate in something that doesn’t receive its existence from something else. Philosophers call this a necessary reality rather than a contingent one. Something that doesn’t depend on the physical universe. Something that doesn’t need to be created. Something that exists necessarily. Christians believe the ultimate foundation of reality isn’t nothingness, chance, or an unexplained chain of dependent things. It’s God. This argument alone doesn’t establish every claim of Christianity. But it gives us a powerful reason to ask whether reality ultimately rests on something beyond the physical universe.
