Life Issues in Genesis 13: Abram and Lot Divide the Land

In Genesis 13, we continue with Abram after his sin in Egypt where he trafficked his wife Sarai to Pharaoh. Yet God remained faithful, returning Sarai to her husband and preserving the line of Christ. Abram leaves Egypt wealthy, riches that came from Pharaoh. These possessions would serve as daily reminders of his sin. He returns to Bethel where he'd begun, and there he worships, recognizing his need for God's forgiveness. Now both Abram and his nephew Lot have grown wealthy, and their flocks need more space. Abram graciously offers Lot first choice of land even though as the elder, he could have claimed the best for himself. Lot chooses the lush Jordan Valley, which looks prosperous and appealing. But this valley contains Sodom and Gomorrah, foreshadowing trouble ahead. This reveals an important truth: We're tempted to chase what looks lush and prosperous: better jobs, wealthier communities, more worldly goods. While wealth isn't evil (God gives daily bread to believers and unbelievers alike), it brings temptation. Money isn't the root of all evil, but the love of money is. Wealth gives us control, which can be used for great good or great damage. The church was never called to be wealthy or powerful but faithful. When choosing colleges or careers, we shouldn't just ask "Will I make good money?" but "Where will I worship? What community will surround me?" Lot chose wealth over Godly community, and there were real consequences for him and his daughters. God in His mercy sometimes prevents us from having the wealth that would tempt us into destructive decisions. Even when we fail, He doesn't tie our salvation to our performance. He brings forgiveness and hope through Christ. The chapter closes with Abram building an altar to the Lord, reminded again of God's promise: Jesus is coming.
