For our first Jesus morning motivation video for our series, "Jesus for da morning" I wanted to do the bible study on this idea that we need to: STOP BELIEVING IN YOURSELF. WHAT? What kind of Christian inspiration or motivation is this? YUP. I want you to forget all those sports movies and all those pep talks you got in school and all those things your coaches have poured into you and remember this one thing: JESUS, will never fail you. Because the truth is that if your faith is rooted in yourself, you will fail yourself. IT’S INEVITABLE. You’re a human and you are weak, you need a nap every once in a while, you trip, you zone out- whatever it is: you ain’t perfect. And if you’re a millennial and grew up in the age of all the Disney movies, this idea of “believe in yourself” was so deeply rooted in us, its uncomfortable to truly think like this: like “I can’t rely on myself” “I am going to fail myself” “I can’t be trusted” “IM A SINNER IN NEED OF A SAVIOR” BUT IS THAT NOT ALL TRUE? Do we not fail ourselves everyday? We live in a time of human history where freedom and individualism and independence are SO overvalued that this idea of self-sustaining and “find yourself” and go define yourself are so overvalued that we forget that there’s no such thing as complete independence! But I mean: Look at your bellybutton! Its physical proof that you’re dependent on others, at the end of the day, if you just believe in yourself to make it through life, or hard things, you’ll find that you fail yourself, you’re not strong enough, your not powerful enough, and in the midst of an age that’s radically seeking self actualization and independence and freedom, you’ll find more than ever that you need JESUS. You need someone that’s not bounded by the chains of sin and brokenness, you need someone else, to define you and set you free, because you can’t do that. I've said this in a lot of my other bible study videos, but: You need your identity, your value your life rooted in believing in HIM, because there’s NOTHING to believe in yourself for! It’s like when Moses gave the Israelites the law and then in Debt 30 he said, this is life! Choose life! This is real living. This is real safety. Remember, we are called, as children of God, to not be true to ourselves, to do our desires, to go find ourselves, NO- ACTUALLY, in God we find that he’s already given us an amazing identity, value, purpose in Him and a rock solid rock to build our faith off of, JESUS. So if you don't get anything else from this in depth bible study on NOT believing in yourself, get this: if we believe in ourselves, we are living a life where we have to work and keep up the work and never rest or we might fail, AND MIGHT NOT BE ENOUGH and just keep believing and hoping that we might have enough… NO! SET YOUR FAITH, SET YOUR SIGHTS ON THINGS ABOVE, ON WHAT CHRIST DID ON THE CROSS. COL 3:2 says, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For you are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God.” It doesn't say, "set your sights on what you can do" or "believe in yourself enough and set your sights on yourself!" So, you want Christian inspiration and motivation? Look at the cross. SET YOUR BELIEFS THERE, THE ROCK, THAT ALWAYS SATISFIES, THE ONE YOU CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON, AND WHERE NOTHING DEPENDS ON YOUR ABILITY TO BE ENOUGH. The best part about it? It’s already done. Jesus said, it is finished. And it has been finished, so set you’re believe there. Stop believing in yourself and believe in the one who gives life, and life to the fullest.
