God comes to earth, and He spends an incredible amount of His ministry healing physical illnesses and disabilities. Why? Because Jesus is restoring and redeeming people's bodies to the way they were created to be. He brings wholeness to what is broken and healing into a fallen world. But His miracles point to an even greater spiritual reality. The blind receive their sight, and at the same time, their spiritual eyes are opened to the truth that Jesus is Lord. The lame walk again, and as they take their first physical steps in years, or perhaps for the very first time, they also begin taking steps of faith to follow Him. The dead are raised to life, providing a powerful picture of what happens when someone moves from spiritual death to eternal life through faith in Jesus. These miracles also foreshadow Jesus' own death and resurrection, the cornerstone of the Christian faith. Throughout the Gospels, the physical and the spiritual are beautifully intertwined. The miracles of Jesus don't simply reveal His power to heal bodies. They reveal His power to restore the whole person and His mission to make all things new.
