Jesus' crucifixion is one of the best-attested events of the ancient world, yet His death did not end Christianity—it launched it. From a purely human perspective, the execution of Jesus should have ended His movement. Instead, His frightened disciples soon began publicly proclaiming that He had risen from the dead, and they did so in the very region where He had been crucified. The earliest Christian message was not simply that Jesus was a wise teacher. It was that Christ died for our sins, was buried, was raised, and appeared to witnesses. In 1 Corinthians 15:3–8, Paul preserves an early Christian tradition that includes appearances to individuals, the apostles, and more than 500 people at one time. Whether you believe the resurrection occurred is a separate question, but historians agree that the resurrection proclamation began very early in the Christian movement.
