Why is the Burden of Proof much greater for the Bible?

One of our viewers, Austin O'Keefe, in a comment, demands proof for the original manuscripts of the Bible as evidence for its authority, a demand he would never impose on any secular manuscript, and certainly not on the Qur'an, suggesting a double standard on his part. Austin O Keeffe says the following, “The big holes in the Islamic narrative have been exposed thanks to the work of Jay and others and more recently Mel and colleagues and reluctantly acknowledged by Yasir Qadhi. We should treat the evidence of the early years of Christianity in the same way. Using papyrus is an excuse for not having even one complete page of a gospel from the first century, but that does not help to justify belief that the gospels were written within decades of the Jesus timeline. Just like the Islamic narrative, all Muslims accepted the Uthman story without proof, we shouldn't accept the Christian narrative without sufficient evidence. Just as it would be shocking to a Muslim that the start of Islam might be a story written much later, Christians would totally deny any other story about the start of Christianity, but emotions should not get in the way of the facts or lack of evidence. Most accept that the gospels were within a few decades of the believed crucifixion but where is the evidence? The Josephus paragraph is widely accepted as a forgery, so where is the first century evidence for the Christian narrative?" Morten Simonsen, another viewer, respond to Austin, saying, "I am all for keeping to the same standards, whatever the subject or religion. But where are the sources for your claims? According to Wikipedia the gospel of Mark is written between 66-70 AD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel)". You will find scholars that believe this is too late and others that believe this is too early. They will probably both have their points. If you know how to refute one or the other, then let me know - but I suggest we do not compare modern Western scholars with Islamic scholars, they are not the same breed at all. Furthermore, most scholars will accept the Pauline letters as some of the earliest written Christian documents, dating back to 50 AD. That is less than 20 years after the crucifixion of Christ. Again, do you challenge that view? Lastly, you say there is a widespread agreement of an alleged forgery of Josephus (by Christians I presume), but when I read about it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josephus_on_Jesus) I do not see the relevance, nor that your claim is completely true. Josephus does reference Jesus - on two occasions, of which one is in little doubt. Even the doubted reference is still believed to be true at some level". So, our question is whether O'keefe holds to the same standards that he demands of the Bible (i.e. extant and contemporaneous documents for the events they talk about) as he would secular documents of history, or philosophy? In this video Jay looks at the Greek philosophers like Aristotle of the 4th centuries BC, whose earliest documents don't appear for 1400 years, or the Greek historians like Herodotus or Thucydides, of the 5th century BC, whose earliest copies don't even appear for 1300 years! Yet, no one suggests their writings are fraudulent and cannot be trusted, as they are required reading in most Philosophical or Historical studies. No one, furthermore, seems to worry that the earliest biographies of Muhammad do not appear for 200 years after his death, or that his sayings are not written down until 240 years following his death, nor that they cannot provide a full manuscript of the Qur'an from within the century it was written! Only the authenticity of the earliest Biblical manuscripts are attacked and vilified because we have no originals, despite the fact that they are more numerous (over 24,000 manuscripts of the New Testament alone), and much earlier (over 230 partial or complete manuscripts of the NT by the 6th century AD, almost 400 years before the earliest extant secular documents appear). It is obvious that the burden of proof which is demanded of the Bible is not demanded of any other piece of literature, which suggest a double standard, and this has got to stop. © Pfander Centre for Apologetics - US, 2021 (44,770) mediterranean-by-musiclfiles-from-filmmusic-io
