Important parts commonly shown in reconstructions, like full hands and feet, were never even discovered, but they still appear in statues and illustrations as if they are confirmed facts. Even more surprising, the single neck vertebra originally attributed to Lucy was later identified as belonging to an extinct monkey, not Lucy at all. And when scientists examined the wrist bones that were found, they appeared much more like those of modern chimps than humans. What this reveals is that many of the images people associate with Lucy are built as much on artistic interpretation and evolutionary assumptions as they are on physical evidence. The public is often shown a completed story, while the actual fossil evidence is far more incomplete and uncertain than most people realize.
