For some of you the idea that people would question Jesus virgin birth seems silly. Others of you may have had a hard time accepting the reality of the virgin birth. Suffice to say this particular doctrine has been an area of contention between the liberal/progressive and conservative/fundamentalist camps for a long while. In 1922 a man by the name of Henry Emerson Fosdick preached a sermon in which he stated that the virgin birth, along with other doctrines, wasn’t necessary to believe. Subsequently in 1930 J. Gresham Machen published “The Virgin Birth Of Christ” in defense of the doctrine. The fight for foundational Christian doctrines has been going on much longer than the last decade. Knowing this is encouraging, encouraging because you know that others have had to address these questions long before you and in so doing provided resources to assist you now.
