Here's something about mathematics that absolutely fascinates me. Did humans invent mathematical truth, or did we discover it? Take the Pythagorean theorem. Before Pythagoras was born, the relationship described by the theorem was already true of right triangles. If every human being disappeared tomorrow, would that mathematical relationship suddenly become false? Of course not. That's why many philosophers of mathematics have defended mathematical Platonism, the view that mathematical objects or truths exist independently of human minds. And that raises a massive philosophical question. Where do these necessary mathematical truths ultimately come from? They're not physical objects. You can't put the number 7 in a box. You can't weigh the Pythagorean theorem. Yet mathematics describes the physical universe with incredible power. Christianity offers a fascinating explanation. Mathematical truth isn't floating around as some completely independent thing above God. Rather, Christians can understand the rational structure of reality as ultimately grounded in the eternal rational nature and mind of God. The Pythagorean theorem doesn't scientifically prove Christianity. But mathematics gives us another reason to question the idea that physical matter is all that exists. Maybe the universe is mathematically intelligible because its foundation is not mindless. Maybe behind the rational order of reality is a rational Mind.
