You have probably heard the claim that humans and chimpanzees are 98% genetically similar, and that statistic is often presented as strong proof for human evolution. But what many people do not realize is that the number comes from comparing only selected portions of the genomes that already matched well, while excluding large sections of both human and chimp DNA from the comparison. On top of that, the chimp genome itself is larger than the human genome, which already complicates the simple “98% identical” narrative people repeat online. When researchers compare the genomes more broadly instead of limiting the analysis to the most similar sequences, the similarity numbers drop much lower. That raises an important question. If the actual genetic differences are far greater than commonly claimed, does the evolutionary timeline still make sense? The way the evidence is selected, framed, and interpreted matters, and many people accept the famous 98% claim without realizing how much filtering and assumption went into producing it in the first place.
