But many are being told by medical and psychological professionals that if they don’t affirm their child’s new identity—or adopt new pronouns—their child could harm themselves. Some are even asked the question: “Would you rather have a dead daughter or a living son?” Faced with that kind of fear, most parents choose what they believe will keep their child alive. And that often pushes them toward medical interventions.
