Who Is the Angel of Death? (The Destroyer Explained) | Michael Heiser

Michael Heiser explains that the final plague in Egypt—the death of the firstborn—should be understood within a broader Old Testament pattern where the “destroyer” (Hebrew mashit, from the verb shakat, “to destroy”) is closely associated with the Angel of Yahweh, a figure שגם distinct from yet identified with Yahweh Himself. He connects passages like 1 Chronicles 21 and 2 Samuel 24, where the Angel of Yahweh is explicitly called the destroyer and executes divine judgment, to Exodus 12, where a destroying agent carries out the Passover judgment but is both distinguished from Yahweh (who “does not allow” the destroyer to enter marked homes) and yet elsewhere attributed directly to Yahweh in the Psalms. Heiser resolves this tension by appealing to the concept of Yahweh acting through His own visible manifestation—the Angel of Yahweh—so that God both sends and is the destroyer. He also clarifies that Psalm 78’s reference to “destroying angels” uses different Hebrew terminology (mal’akim ra’im, meaning harmful or unfavorable agents, not necessarily evil beings) and does not contradict the idea that the specific act of killing the firstborn is uniquely tied to Yahweh via the mashit. This layered identity contributes to the “two Yahweh” or “two powers” framework in Jewish theology, where God is both invisible and visible. Heiser then connects this to the New Testament, where Jesus is identified with this second, visible Yahweh figure: the same divine agent who once brought judgment as the destroyer now becomes incarnate and offers Himself as the Passover substitute, protecting rather than destroying. This theological reversal highlights a deep continuity between the Testaments, where the Passover lamb imagery (e.g., 1 Corinthians 5:7) only scratches the surface of a much richer narrative in which the divine warrior-judge becomes the sacrificial savior, revealing a complex and interconnected biblical theology that unfolds more fully when read in its ancient context.
