When people in progressive circles hear the word apologetics, they often dismiss it as little more than conservative evangelicals trying to keep everyone in line—just circling the wagons and repeating talking points. Many conflate it with fringe views or see it as a silly endeavor, unaware of the depth of evangelical scholarship that gets pushed to the margins because of accusations of bias.
But all scholars have biases, including skeptical ones. The question is whether one acknowledges it and still follows the evidence where it leads. Stories like that of Jeremiah Johnston, who faced pressure in Europe to deny the bodily resurrection of Jesus during his PhD, show how true bias often works against evangelical belief, not in favor of it.
Ironically, those who accuse Christians of not listening to evidence are often the ones now refusing to listen. Yet Scripture reminds us there is nothing new under the sun: Jesus Himself faced opposition from Pharisees, Sadducees, and others who denied the supernatural.
The encouragement is clear—Christians must keep pressing forward, staying faithful to Christ, and defending the faith despite misunderstanding or dismissal.
