AI Warning for the American Church

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping work, relationships, communication and even how people search for answers. So how should Christians navigate a world increasingly influenced by AI? Ben Peterson, author of When Intelligence Isn’t Human: Navigating Your Faith in the Age of AI, joins CBN News to explain why he believes the church needs to begin thinking seriously about the spiritual implications of artificial intelligence. Peterson says Christians shouldn't simply reject AI altogether. If you use a smartphone, social media or Google, he argues, you're already interacting with artificial intelligence. Instead, he offers a three-part framework: AI can be a tool, but it should not become your guide—and never your relationship. Used as a tool, Peterson says AI can help businesses organize systems, develop software and work more efficiently. But he warns against allowing it to shape a person's identity, vision, spiritual direction or sense of relationship. The conversation also tackles some of the larger concerns surrounding artificial intelligence, including autonomous warfare, young people's reliance on technology, AI companionship and the concentration of powerful technology in the hands of a small number of companies and executives. Peterson frames many of those concerns through a distinctly Christian worldview. Peterson also discusses warnings from the pope regarding AI, human dignity and autonomous weapons, while arguing that churches and families need practical guardrails for navigating a technological landscape that is changing at extraordinary speed.
