One major message our culture sends to children—and influences parents—is that the goal of life is simply to be happy. While wanting happy children sounds good initially, if happiness is the main focus, we miss deeper growth opportunities found in difficulty and in the crucial act of putting others first. The culture defines happiness as having satisfied desires. When Christian parents adopt this limited view, it hinders their ability to disciple their children and their perspective on seeking eternal life and Christ-like character, as taught in the New Testament.
