The earliest church’s lasting legacy was a counter cultural ethic, one that plays down one’s own rights for the “least of these.” One that rejected participation in empire. One that radically reshaped the structures of power and privilege. One that was organically diverse and radically de-centralized. Would that church recognize American Christians as such? Would that church recognize any post-Constantinian church that wed itself with the powers of the world?
