Who Gave Us the Bible? Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican & Reformed Dialogue

Who determined which books belong in the Bible—and how should Christians understand the development of the canon of Scripture? In this special ecumenical dialogue, representatives from the Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, and Reformed traditions come together for a thoughtful discussion on one of the most important questions in Christian history. We’ll explore the development of both the Old and New Testament canons, the role of the early Church, the Jewish Scriptures, the Deuterocanonical books, the Church Fathers, councils and synods, the Reformation, and the different ways our traditions understand the authority behind the canon. Some of the questions we’ll discuss include: - Was there a universally agreed-upon canon in the early Church? - What role did bishops, councils, and ecclesial tradition play? - How should Christians understand the Deuterocanonical books or Apocrypha? - Did the Reformers restore an earlier canon or alter the Church’s received tradition? - Why do Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Reformed Christians still differ on certain books? - Can Scripture itself identify the complete canon of Scripture? - Where do our traditions actually agree? The goal of this conversation is not simply to debate, but to allow each tradition to explain its own position accurately while engaging the historical evidence and one another respectfully.
