Spiritual Gifts: Tongues or Prophecy - Part 1 | 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 | Pastor John Miller

In 1 Corinthians 14:1-20, the Apostle Paul addresses the proper use and government of spiritual gifts within the corporate gathering of the local church. Writing to correct the extensive misunderstandings and emotional abuses rampant among the Corinthian believers, Paul provides clear, structural directives regarding the gifts of tongues, prophecy, and interpretation. He establishes that while spiritual manifestations are sovereignly distributed by the Holy Spirit, they must always be exercised in Christian love to serve, build up, and strengthen the body of Christ rather than to elevate the individual.
The core theological principle of this study rests on the absolute priority of intelligible instruction over uninterpreted spiritual expressions in the public assembly. Paul draws a sharp contrast between prophecy, which speaks forth God's truth directly to men for their edification, and tongues, which speaks directly to God in mysteries that remain hidden to listeners without an interpreter. True spiritual maturity requires that we engage our minds in corporate worship so that every prayer, song, and teaching can be fully comprehended, allowing the flock to corporate say "Amen" and mature in sound doctrine.
In this study, you will discover:
- The essential biblical distinction between the gifts, the graces, and the government of the Holy Spirit.
- Why the gift of prophecy must be preferred over uninterpreted tongues within the public church assembly.
- The true biblical direction of the gift of tongues as a form of prayer or praise directed exclusively to God.
- The threefold practical outcome of genuine New Testament prophecy: edification, exhortation, and comfort.
- Why spiritual emotionalism must always be guided by corporate understanding and biblical self-control.
- The call for modern believers to grow up into spiritual maturity rather than remaining children in their understanding.
