Your Shame Has a Name. The Church Has Been Getting It Wrong For 200 Years.

There's a difference between guilt and shame. Guilt says you did something wrong. Shame says something is wrong with you — at the deepest level of who you are. And right now we're living through the most weaponized shame cycle in modern history. Social media built a machine. Public exposure. Maximum audience. Permanent record. No path to restoration. They can assemble it in 48 hours. The church accidentally built the same machine long before Twitter did. And it has cost us an enormous number of men. Paul drew a hard line in 2 Corinthians 7 between worldly sorrow and godly grief. One leads somewhere. One is just a prison. If you look at every single encounter in the Gospels where Jesus comes face to face with someone trapped in shame, the pattern is completely consistent. And it looks nothing like what we built. John 8 — the woman caught in adultery. Pharisees. Public square. Maximum crowd. Full exposure. And Jesus kneels down and writes in the dirt. He removes her from the center of attention first. He de-shames her before he calls her to repentance. Not the other way around. Luke 15 — the prodigal son. The father runs. In ancient Near Eastern culture, a man of status did not run in public. But the father ran anyway — putting his own body between his son and the village's judgment. Absorbing his son's shame before the son even reached him. Hebrews 12 says Jesus endured the cross, scorning its shame. Colossians 2 says the charge against you was nailed to that cross. Not metaphorically. Legally. Paid in full. You cannot shame a man into becoming someone different. You'll just shame him into hiding. And eventually, he stops showing up altogether. Find Jesus. Fight culture.
