Romans 14:12

The biblical doctrine of accountability has two distinct but inseparable witnesses. The first is direct: every one of us shall give account of himself to God (Romans 14:12). Peter says the same: They shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead (1 Peter 4:5). Jesus extends the principle to speech itself: every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment (Matthew 12:36). The accounting is universal, personal, and total. The second witness is Jesus's parables — narratives of stewardship in which a master returns and reckons with his servants. In the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), three servants are entrusted with five, two, and one talents; the first two trade and double their stewardship and are commended, while the third buries his single talent and is cast into outer darkness — not for losing money, but for refusing the work. In the parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:23-35), a king would take account of his servants and forgives one a debt of ten thousand talents; that servant then refuses to forgive a fellow servant a hundred pence, and is delivered to the tormentors until he should pay all that was due. In Luke 16:1-13, a steward facing dismissal reduces his master's debts strategically to secure his own future — Jesus commending not the dishonesty but the shrewdness, then drawing the lesson: He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much. The two witnesses cannot be separated. The eschatological day of accounting the epistles announce is the same day at which Jesus's parable-masters return. Accountability in scripture is never abstract: it is the texture of every disciple's daily life under the eye of God, with the conviction that nothing entrusted — talent, time, word, debt forgiven — is unsupervised. The judgment hour reveals what stewardship has already revealed.
